Sleuth started life as an Ed Thorne riff/soundscape - Ed devised the lead riff of the song and much of the ambient sound you hear on the track. Alex Lato took this promising start and restructured it into the current form, writing the lyrics and melody in a 3 day session in August 2014 where he also wrote White Shark and most of Misfit. SJW brought a 'Lenny Kravitz' feel to the bass line, giving the song a strong bass identity, whilst Simon Bowker brought his unique drive and tone to the piece. The final touch was co-producer Javier Weyler's advice to thin out the drum beat, which gave the song some space to breathe.
Lyrically the song is some of Alex Lato's finest work. The title, Sleuth, was controversial, and parts of the first draft of the song were heavily critiqued by Simon Bowker, who pushed Alex to dig deeper. The song is an ode to hope - like much of Alex's work, it focuses on staying positive in the face of adversity, perhaps best expressed in the middle 8 phrase 'When the glass breaks in my head, when there's a splinter in
lyrics
Right under the radar is the race car
In a riot of colour of speed
Like a diamond in the wasteland
Where the weak man loses sleep
I'm going to win this race regardless
Of rattle snakes in my way
I'll be the giant in steel armour
Fighting armies made of clay.
O, O, O.
Ch: I believe in miracles and the impossible do you?
I believe in happiness for everyone do you?
Oh – for everyone, do you?
In the corner of a green field
There's a symbol of glittering gold
Its a shock wave from the stone age
It beckons the soul you’ve sold
O should the brainstorm leave me breathless
Should I be paralised by the sign
O I will fight my foe regardless
Cos I'm restless all the time.
O,O,O.
Ch: I believe in miracles and the impossible do you?
I believe in happiness for everyone do you?
O, when the glass breaks in my head
O, when there’s a splinter in my head
I still believe, I still believe, still believe and I
I still believe I still believe in paradise, for everyone do you?
Ch: I believe in miracles and the impossible do you? (Yes I do)
I believe in happiness for everyone do you? (O, Yes I do)
